Merry Meet!! Today we are going to be talking about beginner Wiccan tools.
I know starting out in this religion or even just the practice of witchcraft can seem really overwhelming and you may not know where to start especially when it comes to tools.
But I don’t want you to panic.
Honestly, the only thing you need in order to successfully practice Wicca or Witchcraft is yourself.
However, there are a few tools that can enhance your learning and your experience. These tools are nice to have and I definitely recommend them to start but they are by no means necessary.
If you are interested in getting a few tools I am going to list the ones I think beginners should own in this post! I’m also going to explain their purpose and how they can be used in ritual and spell work.
If you are a Wiccan or of any other faith and you do not believe in or agree with what I’m saying that is fine, everyone has their own beliefs and opinions and it’s important we all respect each other. Every Wiccan practices their faith and believes differently so it’s fine if we don’t absolutely agree with everything!

Beginner Wiccan Tools
The Athame and Magick Wand
As a Wiccan or a witch energy is very important. We use energy for spell work and during ritual so it’s important that we have a tool to help us direct that energy. Of course, we could use our fingers and that would work perfectly well but if you want a specific tool you then have a few options.
There’s the athame.
The athame is a double-edged steel knife that is used to direct energy during a ritual. It’s usually dull so it’s not used for cutting it’s strictly for ceremonial purposes.
And the wand.
The wand is another tool used to direct energy and is no doubt one of the more popular tools used in The Craft.
Whether you decide to use an athame or a wand is pretty much up to personal preference since they do essentially the same thing. With an athame, you also have the option of cutting a doorway in your magick circle if you have to leave during magick or a ritual. I’ve never tried doing this with a wand so I don’t know if it will work the same way.
Do I think you need both as a beginner? No. I believe you should pick one to start and work with that one as much as you can.
Incense plays a very important role in Wicca. Not only do we use it during ritual and spell work but also during meditation, divination and even prayer.
There are some traditions that believe the incense smoke will carry your wishes up to the Gods and Goddesses.
There are many different forms of incense and you don’t have to use any certain kind, you can use whatever is most comfortable and easiest for you.
I’m going to go over the different types of incense with you now:
Stick incense – This is probably the easiest way for beginners to incorporate incense into your practice. Since you don’t need any other tools besides a lighter to use this form of incense you don’t have to worry about getting some expensive censer.
Powdered or ground incense – This is the form most preferred by other Wiccans that I have talked to. In order to use this form, you would need a censer or some other kind of bowl, some sand to put in the bowl to keep it from cracking under the heat of the incense and some self-lighting briquettes to put the incense on.
Personally, I love using stick incense because they’re easy to use but I love creating my own powdered incense as well.
So it’s all up to you.
Book of Shadows
Many people don’t understand what the book of shadows is.
They think it’s like a bible. I guess in a way you could think of it that way but the book of shadows is a lot more than that.
It is a spell book. It is a journal. It is a mirror book.
The book of shadows is the heart and soul of every Wiccan’s practice.
For some Wiccans and witches, their book of shadows is the only one who knows the truth about their faith.
This is where we write down all of our spells and rituals, important dreams, tarot card spreads, rune meanings, herbal recipes, full moons and anything else that pertains to your practice.
The book of shadows is an extremely important, if not the most important tool that every Wiccan or witch needs for their practice.
It doesn’t have to be an expensive book, it can be a regular spiral bound notebook.
I use a three ring binder, a binder of shadows. This way I can move things around where I need them and when I need more space I just buy a bigger binder.
I recommend finding what works for you. I will be doing a separate post on how to create your book of shadows because I want to go into enough detail for you all.
Crystals are such an amazing tool to have especially for beginner wiccans because there’s so many different things you can do with them.
You can use them for meditation. This can connect you to the Earth and it can also connect you to the crystal itself.
You can also use them in magic in order to enhance your own power and they have abilities of their own that they can lend to your magick.
You can keep them around your home in order to balance any energies that you may be feeling are out of whack. I actually love to do this because I have 2 men living with me right now. and sometimes the house lacks feminine energy.
You can even use them on your altar to represent your deities or any other figures that you make offerings to or work within your Wiccan practice on a daily basis.
Crystals are so important to my Wiccan practice and right now they’re my most used tool. I use them for absolutely everything and I find it they’re an amazing addition to my practice.
Candles are another tool that I really recommend for beginner Wiccans because they’re so easy to incorporate into your practice and you can use them for a lot of different things as well.
Candles add a nice aesthetic to your rituals and you can also use them in your magick for power or just to build the atmosphere.
You can also use candles in your meditation if you wanted to do something like shadow meditation or even just meditating by staring at the candle’s flame.
I recommend having a variety of different color and types of candles so that way you’re always prepared for any situation where you might need or want to use a certain type of candle.
Well everyone that is it for this post!
